Abstract
Jan Blommaert had a profound impact on studies of language in society, pushing many concepts, theories, and research approaches to the center of sociolinguistics. Materialist semiotics is one of the theories and research approaches that he argued for forcefully. Blommaert's approach to semiotics aligns with Kress's social semiotics and Scollon and Scollon's geosemiotics, with an emphasis on the social and materialist nature of signs. By theorizing materialist semiotics, Blommaert argued against the traditional abstract view, which saw meaning systems as timeless and context-less. This paper discusses three core elements of materialist semiotics – spatial scope, orders of indexicalities, and chronotopicity – and presents an ethnographic landscaping case study of a Chinese university's on-campus bilingual signage, in order to illustrate materialist semiotics and to attract more scholarly attention to Blommaert's oeuvre, which offers a wealth of theoretical and empirical potential, and continues to inspire us to do more, to go further.

Abstract
This short paper discusses language and globalization in the context of COVID-19. The pandemic has important impacts on people across the globe, and in particular the absence of face-to-face interaction results in new forms of communication and may lead to new ways of language change. This paper revisits sociolinguistics and globalization, and discusses challenges brought about by COVID-19 and its containment measures. The pandemic generates particularly discourses, especially from those who are affected the most. This paper includes a vignette of such discourses to show that mobility and inequality remain key issues in the current stage of globalization.
With the deepening of modern military reforms, information has become the key to winning modern warfare. The use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to capture image information has become an important means of reconnaissance in modern warfare and plays an irreplaceable role. The image information usually uses a wireless image transmission system, since image information is intercepted or stolen easily during the information transmission, encrypting an image is a common method for ensuring image security. However, traditional encryption algorithms have some deficiencies in terms of efficiency and security. In order to overcome these shortcomings, a new algorithm is proposed in this paper-an improved image scrambling encryption algorithm based on Fibonacci-p coding. The first new idea of the algorithm is to separate the positive and negative signs and data of the scrambled DCT coefficients, then form the symbol matrix and the data matrix respectively, perform the scrambling encryption operation on the symbol matrix. The second new idea is to encrypt the color RGB image by converting the R, G, and B colors into Y, Cb, and Cr, and converting the normal image operation into operations on Y, Cb, and Cr, thereby implementing the encryption operation. The comprehensive performance of the algorithm is optimal with different image information. Experiments results validate the favorable performance of the proposed improved encryption algorithm.

The bumblebee (Bombus lantschouensis Vogt) is an important pollinator of wild plants. Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase (SMPD) is a hydrolase that plays a major role in sphingolipid metabolism reactions. We report the preparation and characterization of a polyclonal antibody for bumblebee SMPD. We then use the polyclonal antiserum to detect the SMPD protein at different development stages and in different tissues. Our results showed that a 1228bp fragment homologous with the B. terrestris SMPD gene was successfully amplified. The molecular weight of the fusion protein was about 70 kDa by SDS-PAGE. An effective polyclonal antibody against SMPD was also obtained from mice and found to have a higher specificity for bumblebee SMPD. Western blotting detection showed that SMPD was expressed at a high level in queen ovaries, although expression was lower in the midgut and venom gland. SMPD expression decreased from the egg stage until the pdd stage. We interpret our results as showing that the development of an effective polyclonal antiserum for the SMPD protein of a bumblebee, which provides a tool for exploring the function of the SMPD gene. In addition, the work has confirmed that SMPD should be considered as an important enzyme during bumblebee egg and larval stages.
